physical ice breakers

BLOBS AND LINES
How to Play

Welcome to the chaotic world of Blobs and Lines, where students can embrace their inner herd animals! In this icebreaker, students will either line up in a specific order (like birthdays, because who doesn’t want to reveal their age?) or gather into “blobs” based on something they have in common (like an obsession with pizza!). This game is fantastic for discovering all the weird things you share with your classmates, and it’s so easy that even a goldfish could play—no clever responses required!

Here are some sample prompts to get the laughter rolling:

  • Line up in alphabetical order by your first names (good luck if you’re a "Zach").
  • Line up in alphabetical order by your last names (hope you’re not sitting next to a "Zuckerberg").
  • Gather with people who have the same eye color as you (the blues vs. the browns showdown!).
  • Gather with those who get to school the same way as you (car, bus, or on the backs of unicorns?).
  • Line up in order of your birthdays, from January 1 to December 31 (everyone can pretend to be a human calendar).
  • Line up based on how many languages you speak (bonus points for gibberish!).
  • Gather into three blobs: those with LOTS of chores, those with A FEW chores, and those with NO chores (the envy will be real).
  • Gather with people who share your favorite season (bring on the summer sun lovers and winter snuggle bugs!).

CONCENTRIC CIRCLES
How to Play

Get ready for the ultimate circle showdown! In this icebreaker, students will form an inside circle and an outside circle, facing each other like two rival clans about to engage in a dance-off. Each pair will discuss their answers to getting-to-know-you questions and then rotate, forming new partnerships faster than you can say “awkward silence.” This game is perfect for one-on-one chit-chat and gives everyone a chance to feel like they belong—like a cozy blanket burrito!

Here are some sample questions that will spark hilarious conversations:

  • Do you play any sports? If so, which ones? (Bonus points if you can invent a new sport!)
  • Are you shy or outgoing? Why? (This is a safe space; no judgment for your karaoke dreams!)
  • What was the last movie you saw? Did you like it? (Spoiler alert: your opinions might get dramatic!)
  • Describe your perfect dinner (food fights optional).
  • What would you do with a million dollars? (Buy all the chocolate, obviously!)
  • What is one thing you’re good at? (No modesty allowed; go big or go home!)

THIS OR THAT
How to Play

Welcome to the epic debate of This or That, where students will argue over life’s greatest mysteries! Topics will range from “Which animal makes a better pet…dog or cat?” to “Would you rather live in the country or city?” Each student must pick a side and physically move to the corresponding side of the room—like a game of emotional tug-of-war! This game is a blast and helps students find their tribe, all while boosting their confidence (and probably leading to some hilarious arguments).

Sample questions to spark the friendly chaos:

  • Would you rather live in the country or the city? (Bugs or traffic? Tough choice!)
  • Should all students be required to learn a second language? (Let’s hear those passionate opinions!)
  • Which is worse: bad breath or body odor? (Get ready for some spicy debates!)
  • Would you rather be indoors or outdoors? (Nature lovers vs. indoor cats!)
  • Which is better: playing sports or watching sports? (Let the armchair athletes battle commence!)
  • Would you rather travel every single day or never leave home? (Adventure seekers vs. homebodies!)

Let the hilarity ensue!
